Fishmonger Steve Waters from the Midlands made an impassionate plea for Boris Johnson to retake his seat in 10 Downing Street. Mr Waters assured all the businessmen he has spoken to – without exception – want Mr Johnson back in his role as Prime Minister. He added the former Prime Minister is the only Conservative candidate who can really bring the country’s economy back on track.

Mr Waters told BBC Breakfast: “He’s the one man who can turn it around for the Conservative Party.

“And you can look the constituents and the Opposition in the eye and say, ‘That man has a mandate’.

“So, if you’re watching Boris, your country needs you!”

Having been elected Prime Minister with a landslide victory in 2019, Boris Johnson is the only Conservative candidate who has a mandate, Mr Waters added.

Speaking from Birmingham Indoor Market, the fishmonger said: “This is the Midlands, and I’ve been speaking to small and medium businessmen.

“Every morning of the week and almost to a man this morning, they are all saying the same thing: they want to see Boris Johnson return to where the British electorate put him.

“He was removed by MPs. I think he’s had his yellow card. He’s done his time in the sin bin in rugby terms.

“It’s time for him to come back and out in the performance of his life.

“And for those MPs who have a problem with that because they are a bit nervous about everything, he will be giving the Opposition sleepless nights.”

As Mr Johnson is flying back to Britain from his Caribbean holiday, speculation is mounting over his potential re-run.

Reports say the former Prime Minister has so far secured half of the votes required to qualify for the race, with unnamed supporters suggesting he has as many as 50 MPs backing him.

Tim Montgomerie, the founder of the ConservativeHome website, told BBC 4’s Today programme that Mr Johnson could get as many as 140 nominations to run for the leadership – surpassing the 100 threshold set by the 1922 Committee.

Other potential candidates include Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordaunt, who both ran in the summer’s leadership race, with Mr Sunak losing to Liz Truss in the final two.

Jeremy Hunt and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, who had been tipped to join the contest, both ruled out their candidacy.

Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the 1922 Committee of backbenchers, said the new Prime Minister will be announced by October 28.

The former Prime Minister was forced out of power after a wave of resignations prompted by his Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid both stepped down following the Chris Pincher groping scandal.
