Thunderstorms in Larimer County spark dangerous flash floods

After Friday’s thunderstorms, Larimer County is seeing dangerous flash floods in the Crystal Mountain, Wild Song and Buckhorn areas.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office is responding to flooding reports in multiple locations in the Buckhorn area, according to a tweet sent around 6:30 p.m. The Red Cross Evacuation Center is set up at Timberline Church located at 2908 South Timberline Road in Fort Collins.

Central Larimer County was issued a flash flood warning until 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. It reported flash flooding east of Glen Haven, along with the Crystal Mountain and Buckhorn areas, leaving County Road 43 impassable. It also can’t be accessed west of Stove Prairie Road.

Buckhorn Creek is likely prone to significant rises, according to the warning.

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office issued an emergency message that dangerous flooding is happening from Crystal Mountain to Wild Song.

“Immediately reach higher ground by any means necessary,” it advises. “Avoid area subject to flooding including dips, low spots, ditches, etc. and do not attempt to cross flowing streams or creeks.”

The office adds not to drive through flooded roads. To get updates by text, send Flood2022 to 888777.
