Met Office announce ‘hottest day of year’ – and another could hit UK soon

  • The record for the hottest day of the year so far in the UK could be broken twice this coming week, weather maps show.

The Met Office confirmed today (Sunday, May 21) saw unseasonably hot weather in Porthmadog, Wales, as the mercury hit 23.3C – the hottest temperature recorded in the UK in 2023.

And that trend is set to continue with Monday seeing the same, if not hotter just down the road in Cardiff, and 22C hitting parts of London.

The record for the year could be broken again just a few days later, as temperatures of around 23C are once again predicted for Cardiff on Thursday.

For those living in Scotland, however, temperatures might be a bit more underwhelming.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Under the cloud across Scotland temperatures in places have struggled to climb into double figures.”

Looking at other parts of the country, Manchester will be a warm 20C tomorrow, dropping to 16C and 17C on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.

But the end of week will be sunnier once again, with Saturday climbing back up to 20c.

In Northern Ireland, temperatures aren't expected to exceed 17C all week, with 15C and cloudy conditions looking like the norm.

It was reported yesterday that the UK could soon be hit by a heatwave starting next week and lasting around three weeks.

Exacta Weather's James Madden has claimed that from Thursday Brits might want to start getting the BBQ out and slap on the sun cream.

He said: “From later this week (Thurs/Fri) and into next weekend is now looking extremely favourable for a major area of high pressure and some even warmer conditions to become lodged across the country for several days, and this is also starting to show up clearly and consistently within numerous main third-party computer models.

“At the very least we should be seeing max temperatures in the mid to high 20s developing, and we may not be too far away from the 30c mark as temperatures rise significantly across most and if not all parts of the country, and in perfect timing for the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend."
