Killer’s laugh turned to pain in worst botched execution ever lasting 90 minutes

A murderer smiled at his victims' family before he went on to suffer the world's worst execution which included a horrifying 90-minute ordeal before he was pronounced dead.

Shocked spectators watched on in horror as Joseph Wood was caught "gasping and snorting" moments after he addressed the loved ones of Debbie Dietz and her father Gene Dietz.

On August 7, 1989, Wood stormed into the family-owned body store and fatally shot his ex-girlfriend's father before killing her with a 38 calibre revolver.

The pair had been involved in a turbulent on and off relationship for five years before Debbie took out a restraining order against him due to domestic violence.

It has been eight years since Wood was executed at Florence State Prison in Arizona for the brutal murders, with his last words causing rage among the Dietz family.

He said: "I take comfort knowing today my pain stops, and I said a prayer that on this or any other day you may find peace in all of your hearts, and may God forgive you all."

But what he didn't know was that his pain would last for nearly two hours, with his lawyer pleading that he was still alive after being injected with a sedative and pain killer on July 23, 2014.

It was reported that he gasped over 600 times, while his jaw dropped and his chest expanded and contracted during the execution which should have taken 10 minutes.

His lawyer demanded that the courts put an end to the execution and wrote in legal documents: "He has been gasping and snorting for more than an hour.

"He is still alive."

Despite the desperate attempt to put a stop to the slow and painful death, State Department of Corrections Director Charles Ryan insisted that Wood felt "no pain."

He said: "Throughout this execution, I conferred and collaborated with our IV team members and was assured unequivocally that the inmate was comatose and never in pain or distress."

Wood's capital punishment was branded "an entirely preventable horror" with eyewitnesses comparing the scene to a fish taken out of water.

However, the family of the victims said his death was nothing compared to what Debbie and Gene endured, reports Sky News.

"What I saw today with him being executed, it is nothing compared to what happened on August 7, 1989," said Debra's sister, Jeanne Brown.

"What's excruciating is seeing your father lying there in a pool of blood, seeing your sister lying in a pool of blood."

While her brother-in-law Richard Brown said people on death row "deserve to suffer."

He commented: "I saw the life go out of my sister-in-law's eyes."

"You guys are blowing it all out of proportion about these drugs. This man, he conducted a horrifying murder, and you worry about the drug and how it affects him. Why don't we give him a bullet? Why don't we give him some Drano?

"Now my family can rest in peace. He smiled and laughed at us, and went to sleep."
