Hopes for fresh Levi Davis port search as family push for new probe after cops reveal they believe X-Factor star drowned | The Sun

THE family of missing X-factor star Levi Davis are pushing for a new investigation in a bid to get more answers about what happened amid fears the rugby player drowned.

Spanish cops told Levi's heartbroken mum they believe a man who reportedly drowned at the Barcelona port was her son.

Detectives think the 24-year-old rugby player slipped below the surface at the port after visiting The Old Irish Pub and the Hard Rock Cafe on October 29.

Four crew members of a cruise liner told investigators they spotted a man in distress, wearing the same light-coloured top as Levi, shouting for help in English.

A lifebuoy was tossed down to him without success, but search operations by the police and coastguard were later suspended as crews were unable to find a body.

But during a meeting with Levi's mum Julie and his close friend Richard Squire, cops revealed that Levi had gone back to the port before he vanished.

And now a Spanish judge will have to authorise a fresh search of the water and other inaccessible areas of the port.

Levi's disappearance had not been reported to police at the time, leading the port incident to be dubbed a "missed chance" to save him.

The only trace of him that has ever been found was his passport which turned up 20 days after he vanished at the Barcelona port.

It was previously reported that Levi's phone was pinged at Sants train station, but police now say it last pinged close to the port within hours of the sighting in the water.

Details of the operation to locate a man in the water seen by the crew on cruise liner MSC Bellissima, around 5.30am that day, have emerged.

Coastguards in Barcelona mobilised their helicopter called Helimer 203 and a vessel called Salvamar Mintaka.

A boat operated by firefighters was also sent to the scene along with police and Red Cross vessels.

The search operation is said to have lasted an entire day but was called off after it was confirmed no one was missing from the cruise liner and police confirmed no one had been reported missing in port waters or in the sea off Barcelona.

Levi's mum and his friend Richard met with cops on Monday to discuss developments in the case.

In a statement, she told MailOnline that his loved ones were still holding out hope that the missing star would make a safe return.

Julie said: "Extensive work has been done to track Levi's movements on the night of the 29 Oct and police are able to confirm that following his last reported sighting at the Hard Rock Café, Levi walked back down La Rambla and entered the commercial port.

"His phone last registered in the early hours of Saturday 30 October with a phone tower at the far end of the port closest to the sea entrance.

"The investigation is still very much ongoing and we are hoping that the Port Police will authorise and carry out a further search of the waters and other inaccessible areas of the port.

"We would like to thank the Mosso d'esquadra and the British Consulate in Barcelona for their continued hard work.

"No further comment will be made at this time. We continue to ask that the press respect the feelings and privacy of Levi's family and friends at what is a very emotionally distressing time."

The Sun Online tried to retrace the star's steps in Ibiza where he stayed with Richard before travelling to Barcelona by ferry to "meet some mates."

Exactly what has happened to Levi remains a mystery.

But after arriving in the Spanish city, the rugby ace never got in touch to confirm he had arrived.

He was last seen leaving The Old Irish Pub on La Rambla at 10.05pm, after ordering a pint while watching football on TV.

A bartender told The Sun he sat alone near the door with a beer and his backpack, but still "seemed normal" despite not staying long.

He then headed north on the bustling street to the Hard Rock Cafe before journeying towards the port.

Shortly before midnight on October 30, Levi reportedly had the last known contact with any of his friends or family.

Mike Guida, 25, said the missing Brit called him at 9.22pm and again at 11pm before leaving a message for him at 11.04pm.

“I believe I was the last person to hear from him,” he told The Sun Online.

The rugby star had posted a haunting final video before he disappeared in which he said he was being blackmailed by criminals who threatened to kill him and his family.

Despite police investigating two potential sightings of Levi, weeks after his disappearance, nothing has come out of it.

A witness claimed they had seen him wandering near La Boqueria market, and on another occasion, the same witness reported seeing him "lost and confused" in Placa Sant Agusti Vell near the city's Arc de Triomf monument.

The puzzling case has sparked multiple theories, including that Levi might have gone missing "voluntarily".
