Emergency services have been scrambled to Brighton's Royal Albion Hotel where a massive blaze has reportedly broken out.

At least seven fire engines are in attendance, along with a number of ambulances and police vehicles

The blaze is thought to have started on the historic hotel's fourth floor and flames can be seen leaping from several upper floor windows.

Roads around the Old Steine, including eastbound on Kings Road, are all closed. The Brighton Argus reports: "There are hundreds of people along the seafront watching in horror as the hotel goes up in flames.

"Police are moving people towards the pier, warning about the danger of the huge amount of smoke coming from the building. Flames are coming from a window of the hotel and debris is falling onto the ground below. Things are getting worse."

Bystanders say they have been warned by police to move away from the scene over concerns that the entire building could collapse.

A statement from the fire service read: "East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have been called to a fire on Old Steine, Brighton.

"Firefighters from Preston Circus, Newhaven, Hove, Lewes, Eastbourne, Pevensey and appliances from West Sussex were called out at 17:24 on 15/07/2023 to reports of smoke.

"Four breathing apparatus wearers are using two main jets and an Ariel Ladder Platform to extinguish the fire.

"The Old Steine and part of Kings Road have been closed while the incident is ongoing," the statement continued. "We are asking the public to please avoid the area and find alternative routes of travel".

A further statement is expected at 7:30 this evening.
