A dog that began her day as a lost pet became a winner after securing a third-placed finish at a dog show.

Adventurous five-year-old Bonnie caused panic for her owners when they discovered she had escaped their home in Bolney, West Sussex.

Bonnie was found later that day by John Wilmer on the side of the road as he was on his way to a show with his two dogs.

And despite the unlikely circumstances, Bonnie actually came third in her rescue dog class and Mr Wilmer said he thought it'd be a good idea to enter her.

"I was in a bit of rush to get there when we found Bonnie and put her in the car," he said.

"I was so pleased she did well."

An appeal for information following Bonnie's escape was posted on social media by her family, and her owner, Paula Closier, spoke of her worry in the hours Bonnie went missing.

"We were frantic as we live right by a main road," she said.

"Bonnie used to be a street dog and we were so worried she wouldn't have known to come back.

"We're so thrilled she's safe and well and also a winner, you couldn't make this stuff up."

Bonnie's been part of the Closier family for four years after being found on the streets of Crete and was rescued by a charity.

Despite a stunning third-placed finish in a show she wasn't meant to enter, Ms Closier said: "It's a shame she didn't come first in the show".
