Sir Lindsay called on Rishi Sunak to the dispatch box to answer his first question which received roars of applause and clapping from backbench Tory MPs.

But the speaker quickly interjected and asked them not to “damage the furniture” in the House of Commons.

He said: “Don’t damage the furniture! Cheer him by all means but don’t damage the furniture. Come on.”
