Gary Lineker mocks Rishi Sunak’s Rwanda migration fightback

Rishi Sunak reveals government working on ‘new treaty with Rwanda’

Gary Lineker took a swipe at Rishi Sunak after he launched a fightback over his Rwanda scheme.

The Prime Minister pledged emergency legislation and a new treaty with the African nation in a Downing Street press conference after the Supreme Court ruled the flagship policy was unlawful.

Following the announcement, the Conservatives shared a post on social media platform X promoting the plan to bring forward emergency legislation.

The post said: “Rishi Sunak will introduce emergency laws to start Rwanda returns.”

In response, the Match of the Day host said: “Don’t you have to have been there before in order to return?”

The football pundit has been a critic of the Government’s illegal immigration crackdown.

He sparked a BBC impartiality row in March after he took to X, formerly Twitter, to slam the Illegal Migration Bill and compared language used to that of Nazi Germany.

He was responding to a video posted by the Home Office of Mrs Braverman discussing the flagship legislation.

New social media rules by the corporation in the wake of the row allow high-profile presenters outside of news and current affairs to express personal views on issues but they must stop short of political campaigning.

The ex-England striker also gloated over the sacking of Mrs Braverman, a popular figure on the Tory right, earlier this week.

It comes after the Supreme Court rejected the Government’s appeal over its policy of sending asylum seekers arriving by unauthorised means on a one-way ticket to Rwanda.

The five senior judges unanimously ruled that the scheme is unlawful because there is a risk genuine asylum seekers could be forced back to their country of origin by Kigali.

Mr Sunak this evening announced plans to seek an upgraded agreement with Rwanda in a bid to address the concerns.

He will also bring forward emergency legislation to deem Rwanda a safe destination.
