The United States is moving towards green lighting the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, in what would be another major blow for Vladimir Putin. President Zelensky told reporters after a meeting with Nato head Jens Stoltenberg last week that acquiring fighter jets was a “dream” and an “important task”.

His comments were backed up by Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine’s defence minister – Oleksiy Reznikov.

Mr Sak said Ukraine would gain an “immense advantage” if it were supplied with modern military jets.

In what could be a major boost to Ukraine’s war effort, US defence officials have suggested that momentum is growing within the White House over the supply of the lethal jets.

An official from the US Defence Department told Politico: “I don’t think we are opposed.”

However, they stressed that no final decision had yet been taken.
