Wife thought £400k winning ticket was a birthday ‘joke’ from her husband

A wife thought she received a joke scratch card when she won over £400,000 after her husband bought her more than £80 worth of the cards for her birthday.

The Louisville man told Kentucky Lottery officials he bought his wife the bundle for her birthday from an off licence in Louisville, and put them in a card for her.

She opened the card and discovered a $20 Wild Numbers 100X ticket was a $500,000 winner, but didn't initially believe it.

"She comes walking in the living room and she says, 'Please tell me you didn't give me a joke card.' I said, 'What?' She said it again and I said, 'Babe, I don't joke about money,'" the man explained.

"She says, 'I need you to look at this.' She showed it to me. I was stunned. I looked at it again and I said, 'Yeah, this is unbelievable.'"

The man visited lottery headquarters to collect the prize on his wife's behalf.

"I told her this will be the best birthday we'll ever have. No way this will ever happen again," he said.

The man said the money will go into the bank for now and explaining what made him buy the tickets, he added: "It's hard to buy for somebody who has everything, so I thought, I'll give her $100 in scratch-offs."

It follows news that a fellow lottery player used the same combination of numbers to win three $50,000 (£40,000) prizes in the space of just 11 months.

The 52-year-old Charles County, Maryland, man told officials that he previously collected two $50,000 prizes from the May 18, 2022, contest with a pair of tickets bearing the numbers 4-8-5-4-8.

The man used the same numbers to play Pick 5 this month when he visited Big Mouth Beer, Wine and Liquor on Crain Highway in Waldorf, with the drawing earned him a third $50,000 prize.
