PETER MURRELL is the husband of Scottish politician Nicola Sturgeon.

Sturgeon and Murrell have been together since 2010 and have had a rocky time of late.

Who is Peter Murrell?

Peter Murrell was born on December 8, 1964 and is married to the former First Minister of the Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon, who resigned on February 15, 2023.

He was arrested in April regarding an SNP funding allegation with Sturgeon also being arrested on June 11.

"A 52-year-old woman has today, ​Sunday, 11 June, 2023, been arrested as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party," read a Police Scotland statement.

Murrell is the former SNP Chief Executive Officer and has been embroiled in much controversy after allegations were made regarding the political party's finances and funding.

A total spend of around £600,000 is being investigated by Scotland Police which was earmarked for Scottish independence campaigning.

He was released without charge pending further inquiry.

"Nicola Sturgeon has today, Sunday 11 June, by arrangement with Police Scotland, attended an interview where she was to be arrested and questioned in relation to Operation Branchform," said a spokesperson for Sturgeon.

First Minister of Scotland, Humza Yousaf, said he has spoken to Sturgeon and that she is “in a good place and doing well”.

He continued: “Why would I not want to get some advice from arguably one of the best politicians, the most impressive politicians, Europe has seen over the last couple of decades?”

When did he marry Nicola Sturgeon?

Murrell and Sturgeon met at Young Scottish Nationalists gathering in Aberdeenshire, when she was just 18.

Sturgeon, who was born on July 19, 1970, began dating Murrell in 2003, and the couple married in 2010 in Glasgow.

They have no children.

Sturgeon revealed she had suffered a miscarriage in 2011 when she was 40, but kept it private to avoid being defined by the tragedy.

She admitted in a book that she does not know if she could have “had it all” – and led Scotland’s devolved government as a mum.

She said: “If the miscarriage hasn’t happened, would I be sitting here as First Minister right now?

"It’s unanswerable.”

What did Murrell do in his role as Chief Executive Officer of the SNP?

Although Murrell previously worked in politics, the role of a CEO is more of a backroom role – however that was overshadowed by his marriage to one of the most high-profile politicians in the UK.

He was described as "the most powerful SNP figure outside of the Holyrood and Westminster parliaments" by The Herald.

Murrell was in charge of the SNP's HQ and heads day-to-day running of Scotland's governing party.

He came under fire for the loss of 21 SNP's seats in the 2017 General election, for his undisclosed salary, and missing campaign funds.
