This has been the case with many over the years but also with BBC reporter James Clayton after he had the chance to interview tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Who is BBC journalist James Clayton?

In April 2020, James Clayton was appointed as the technology reporter for the BBC in North America.

Based in San Francisco, Clayton has previously been published by outlets such as The Telegraph and Yahoo.

As a tech journalist, he written about companies such as Amazon, Google and Apple.

He also covered Apple's 2021 trial with games company Epic Games.

Prior to his current role, Clayton also worked on BBC Newsnight.

Due to his location, he has also reported on natural disasters from the California storms in January 2023, to the 7.2 magnitude Haiti earthquake in August 2021.

When did James Clayton interview Elon Musk?

On April 11, 2023, James Clayton managed to interview tech mogul Elon Musk in a hastily arranged interview.

The Twitter owner said that he took the opportunity to discuss things with the network as there was "a lot going on" and it seemed a good point to address some of those things.

Clayton kicked off the interview by addressing a label put on the BBC's Twitter page that stated the corporation was "government funded" something which the network refutes and has demanded the platform changes.

In the interview Elon Musk did state that they were looking to change that to denote that the corporation was publicly funded.

James Clayton addressed a lot of contentious points during his chat with Musk, which made for must-watch viewing.

He asked the Twitter owner about his purchase of the platform, sleeping in the office, the decision to sack a large number of employees and the ongoing health of the social media giant.

How can I watch James Clayton's interview with Elon Musk?

In many parts of the interview, Elon Musk tries to turn the tables on James Clayton but asking more questions of the interviewer than being asked of himself.

Musk became particularly defensive when it was suggested that more hateful content was appearing on the platform.
