Seven shocking moments from Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial

Writer Anna Pasternak was part of the same social circles as Maxwell while attending Oxford and told the BBC, “It was very clear to me even as an undergraduate that she was interested in power and money.

“She was one of those people at parties who always looked over your shoulder to see if there was somebody more powerful or more interesting while she was air-kissing you.”

However, when Maxwell's father was found dead on his yacht in 1991, her financial support plummeted.

Fox Business reported that at her father's peak, he was worth $1.9bn, but an investigation found that he had misappropriated the pension funds of his publishing businesses, reducing his finances to a negative $1bn.

Find out about Ghislaine Maxwell's secret husband Scott Borgerson

Harry Mount met Maxwell when he was working at the New York branch of the Daily Telegraph.

In September 2021, Mount wrote about the encounter in Oldie Magazine.

“If I’d dug a little deeper, I’d have realized there was something fishy going on," he wrote.

"When Robert Maxwell died, massively in debt, Ghislaine Maxwell had been left with an £80,000 a year income from a trust fund.

“A lot of money – a lot more than I earned. But I lived in a tiny apartment in Greenwich Village. And here she was in a mega-schloss – with 12 rooms, eight fireplaces, and a lift."

He reported that evidence showed her former partner Jeffrey Epstein had purchased the apartment in 2000.

Mount continued, writing, "Given all God’s gifts as a child – money, looks, and education – she was also given a devil for a father: a brute who alternately bullied and spoilt her, and got her into Oxford University by endowing a Maxwell scholarship at her college, Balliol, that she then took advantage of.

He concluded, "Thus the strange combination of being ultra well-connected while being fundamentally unsure of herself, along with the desperate desire to stay in with the great and the good.

"Thus the curiosity and charm with a shy, new Brit in town. Thus the willingness to live in a house bought for her by a monster."

Is Ghislaine Maxwell married?

Scott Borgerson was allegedly Maxwell's secret husband after her matrimonial status was revealed on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, as Manhattan prosecutors accused her of purposely hiding her wealth, the New York Post reported.

Assistant US Attorney Alison Moe told Manhattan federal Judge Alison Nathan, “The defendant also makes no mention whatsoever about the financial circumstances or assets of her spouse, whose identity she declined to provide to Pretrial Services."

Maxwell later told court chiefs that she had tried to file for a divorce before her arrest so her husband wouldn’t suffer from "being associated with her."

It came after Borgerson had been linked to the $1million New Hampshire mansion where Maxwell was snared by the FBI.

The court previously heard how Maxwell is claimed to have purchased her bolthole with an ex-military man named "Scott."

Both "Scott" and Ghislaine – going by the name "Jen" – also used the same surname "Marshall."

Borgerson has always denied their relationship, saying they are just old friends.

Why was Ghislaine Maxwell arrested?

When Jeffrey Epstein was apprehended by law enforcement in New Jersey on July 6, 2019, Maxwell disappeared from the public eye until her arrest.

While in hiding, Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested in New Hampshire on July 2 of 2020 by the FBI on charges linked to Epstein.

Maxwell's trial proceedings started in New York City on November 29, 2021.

She is scheduled to be sentenced on June 28, 2022, and prosecutors are fighting for a 55-year sentence for the disgraced British socialite.

Maxwell has repeatedly denied any involvement in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes.

However, Maxwell's attorneys have argued that she should receive leniency and only receive a maximum of 20 years in prison.

“Ms Maxwell cannot and should not bear all the punishment for which Epstein should have been held responsible."

They argued, "Ms Maxwell has already experienced a hard time during detention under conditions far more onerous and punitive than any experienced by a typical pre-trial detainee, and she is preparing to spend significantly more time behind bars. Her life has been ruined.

“Ms Maxwell is not a dangerous criminal or a habitual offender. She is someone who wants nothing more than to live a normal family life – something she was denied because of her association with Epstein and will now almost certainly never have,” they continued.

“The public does not need to be protected from Ms Maxwell and such considerations should have no weight in determining her sentence."

Her attorneys argued that Maxwell's "difficult, traumatic childhood with an overbearing, narcissistic, and demanding father … made her vulnerable to Epstein."

They concluded, “It is the biggest mistake she made in her life and one that she has not and never will repeat.”

Maxwell was found guilty of five of the six charges against her on December 29, 2021.
