But his wife just laughed at the prospect of him running off with a younger woman with a joke from Fawlty Towers.
Vine said: “She said, ‘For goodness sake, do you really think a woman like that would be interested in a Brilliantine stick insect like you?’”
The radio and TV presenter, 54, appeared on BBC One show Strictly in 2015 and was paired up with Karen Clifton.
Vine says he started to develop ‘‘feelings’’ for Karen and feared that he too could become one of the ballroom “casualties”.
The star said: “I became great friends with Karen but I thought, ‘Gosh, I can see why this happens’ because you go into a completely different space. Suddenly I’m seeing someone who is like a goddess, super-human.
“The power and the strength and grace of that person, then you are spending eight, nine hours a day within two inches of them. It’s a powerful thing, that’s all I can say. I thought, ‘I don’t know what I’m feeling here’.”
Asked if he was ever tempted to act on his feelings, he said: “Oh God no. That’s impossible.”
But then he revealed that his wife was “cool” about the whole sitiuation as she put him in his place.
She compared it to a famous line from Fawlty’s The Psychiatrist episode where Basil (John Cleese) keeps ending up in compromising situations with a beautiful young female guest.
His wife Sybil (Prunella Scales) tells him bluntly: “For goodness’ sake Basil, do you really think a woman like that would be interested in a Brilliantine stick insect like you?’”
