Nicola Bulley’s partner Paul Ansell has reached out to Mercedes for help tracking the missing mother-of-two’s car keys, a family friend has revealed.

Charlotte Drake, who lives close to the couple in St Michael’s on Wyre, Lancashire, says that Nicola would definitely have been carrying her distinctive wooden paw-print key-ring, which had two Mercedes keys attached.

Paul has already contacted the car company to ask if there was any way of “tracking” the keys in hope that it might provide a clue to Nicola’s whereabouts.

Charlotte pushed back against speculation from “armchair detectives” that Nicola might have left the keys in her car, insisting that the keys “were definitely on Nikki at the time” when she disappeared.

Another friend of the couple, Heather Gibbons, said Paul had got in touch with Mercedes very soon after it became clear that Nicola was missing.

"Paul has been clear about Nikki's keys being missing from the get go,” she added.

"In the local searches he specifically asked people to keep their eyes open for them and even organised for people to go out with metal detectors.

"One of the first things he did was to contact Mercedes to see if they could be tracked."

Meanwhile, former detective Mark Williams-Thomas is set to join the hunt for the missing mum-of-two, which is now in its third week.

Williams-Thomas, who helped expose sick DJ Jimmy Savile and advised on the search for Madeleine McCann, says that he plans to comb the banks of the River Wyre to “bring factual evidence analysis and dismiss some of the inaccuracies” connected to the high-profile case.

He wrote on Twitter: “I will be spending time up in St Micheals on Wyre [sic] next week to pull together a quick turn around report of what exactly is known about the disappearance of #nicolabulley. I will explore all the options , bring you a factual evidence analysis and dismiss some of the inaccuracies.”

It’s still Lancashire Police’s main working theory that Nicola, who walked the banks of the river regularly with her dog, somehow slipped into the fast-flowing waters and was swept down towards Morecambe Bay.

But Paul Ansell, speaking to Channel 5, says he’s “100%” sure that the police are wrong.

“I am 100% convinced it's not the river, that's my opinion,” he said. "You can’t walk your dog down a river and just vanish into thin air.

    "Something happened that day, something…”
