Coronation weekend weather forecast from the Met Office
Weather forecasts are predicting temperatures of 20C in some part of the UK this weekend. Those hoping to celebrate the King’s Coronation in the sun may be in luck as London is set to see some of the warmest weather so far this year. However, forecasts also show the weather could still be grey and cloudy despite the warmer conditions.
Both the Met Office and the BBC are showing highs of 20C on Sunday afternoon before the cloud clears and the possibility of some sunny spells in the evening.
The Met Office’s official Coronation weather forecast for Sunday said: “Sunday will see areas of rain and drizzle at first. Heavy, possibly thundery showers may possibly develop across parts of central, eastern and southern England, with parts of northeast England and eastern Scotland looking fairly grey and wet.
“Western parts of the UK, Northern Ireland, Wales, western Scotland and southwest England are expected to see the driest and brightest weather.”
It’s a stark contrast to May 2022, which was the fifth warmest on record with the warmest temperature recorded at Heathrow on May 17 at 27.5C.
Those hoping to celebrate outside or catch a glimpse of the King and Queen as they travel through London on Saturday may have to abandon any outdoor plans.
The Met Office’s Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said the rain would deliver “some heavy bursts at times”.
The forecaster said rain is forecast in London around lunchtime, so those waiting for the King and Queen outside Westminster Abbey might want to be prepared.
Look ahead to Bank Holiday Monday forecasts continue to look unsettled.
The Met Office said it will be “mostly dry” but a “band of rain” in the west will bring rain “to many places”.
The forecast said: “This rain will be followed by sunshine and scattered showers. Winds are expected to be fresh to strong with temperatures near average.”
The BBC forecast shows a similar story: “A dry and mild day. Overnight and into Monday, a band of rain will sweep eastwards. This will leave sunny spells and showers for Monday afternoon, locally heavy and thunder.
“Mild and breezy. Tuesday will start sunny but some clouds with the chance of a shower move in later.”

Long-range weather maps show May 17 as the exact day the UK will see this year’s highest temperatures. A Netweather forecaster May looks like a “warmer-than-average month” with the possibility of an “early hot spell” towards the end of May.
The Met Office’s long-range forecast said: “High pressure looks to build from the west or southwest, meaning further Atlantic frontal zones will likely be deflected towards the northwest of the UK, as many other areas becoming mostly dry, at least for a time.
“Winds should also ease for most, compared to the start of this period, and will feel warm in the best of the sunshine.”
