This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week and it’s crucial to shed light on how millions of women going through the menopause may not realise how their hormones can wreak havoc on their emotional wellbeing.

Thanks in part to high-profile women who have been willing to speak out publicly about their experiences, we’re slowly beginning to shake off the stigma of talking about menopause.

But we still have a long way to go. A significant 61 per cent of women say the symptoms of their hormonal changes have a ‘massive effect’ on their lives and those around them.

Millions of women going through the menopause may not realise how their hormones can wreak havoc on their emotional, as well as physical, wellbeing

But despite this impact, around 2 in 5 women in the UK still consider menopause a subject ‘no one talks about’, with a third finding it hard to discuss their experience even with their partners.

There’s no one-size-fits-all menopause experience, but more than 75% of women experience menopausal discomfort, and a quarter describe it as ‘severe’.

This can vary from night sweats to hot flushes, brain fog, disturbed sleep, anxiety, irritability and depression, to name a few.

Menopause Support UK found 77% of women find at least one menopause symptom ‘very difficult’ to live with.

Karen, 57, was suffering with hot flushes and anxiety, which became so bad she could barely focus, but found her symptoms improved ‘massively’ since taking Red Clover+

‘I was having hot flushes that were keeping me up at night. They were dreadful,’ recalls 57-year-old Karen Jackson, a secondary school biology teacher from High Wycombe. ‘It was so bad that I couldn’t really work properly.’

‘I was feeling anxious too, and I think it was all compounded from not being able to sleep. I got to the point where I couldn’t actually focus on anything because I was so tired.’

Karen started experiencing the menopause after she turned 43. As well as impacting her sleep and mood, it also affected what she could eat. She found herself having to give up things like wine and spicy foods.

‘It was just horrid, not being able to drink and eat what you’d normally do,’ she says.

Karen was looking for options when a relative told her about a natural supplement called Red Clover+.

‘Once I started taking it, things improved massively. I noticed the difference around the second pack. I still get the odd warm moment but it’s nothing like I had before. It’s been brilliant.’

FutureYou Cambridge’s Red Clover+ combines two scientifically supported natural ingredients – red clover and sage – in a unique, single tablet formulation

‘It was an ideal solution, and I think that would be the case for a lot of women. I haven’t had any sort of side effects and I’m absolutely delighted with it. I keep telling everyone about Red Clover+.’

Red Clover+ was developed by FutureYou Cambridge, a leading developer of science-backed health supplements in the heart of the UK’s global research and innovation hub, for women looking for natural support during menopause.

‘There are many options available to help women take control of our hormonal changes, instead of our hormonal changes taking control of us,’ says Dr Miriam Ferrer, PhD, head of product development at FutureYou Cambridge.

‘Many women are using natural approaches around diet and nutrition, cognitive behavioural therapy, herbal therapies and exercise, including cold water swimming, and all of these can be helpful.

‘With Red Clover+, we’ve combined two scientifically supported natural ingredients – red clover and sage – in a unique, single tablet formulation. Red clover helps to maintain a calm and comfortable menopause, and sage also contributes to menopausal comfort*.’

Red clover (Trifolium pratense) contains ‘phytoestrogens’ – plant compounds with a similar chemical structure to the hormone oestrogen. In red clover, these are called ‘isoflavones’. Sage (Salvia officinalis) contains other compounds which have ‘phytoestrogenic activity’.

During menopause, our oestrogen levels decline, so a diet rich in phytoestrogens is believed to be able to mimic the effect of the hormone and diminish effects caused by a lack of oestrogen in the body.

Red Clover+ has been formulated to contain 80mg of isoflavones, in one of the highest concentrations available in a single tablet.

Studies have also shown that sage extract can reduce feelings of loss of concentration in postmenopausal women, as well as helping to reduce fatigue.

Both extracts are complemented with vitamin B6, an essential nutrient that supports hormonal balance, psychological function and the reduction of tiredness.

Asha, 48, says taking Red Clover+ has improved the brain fog and anxiety she was suffering

For 48-year-old Asha Godhania, an HR project manager, the arrival of menopause left her struggling with brain fog, anxiety and other issues.

‘I didn’t know what was going on at the beginning. Was it work stress? Burnout? Had I been working from home too long?’ recalls Asha.

‘And then suddenly, my period started to go awry. And I was like, okay, I’ve overlooked something. So I started to read up and do my research, looking for what was going to work for me.’

Asha’s sister told her about Red Clover+. ‘I thought, I’ve got nothing to lose and it’s natural.’

‘After four weeks of taking Red Clover+, I really started to notice the difference and things started to alleviate.’

‘Before, I’d been feeling anxious and waking up feeling like the sky was going to fall down. But I started to really feel a lot better. I felt like it just balanced me out.’

‘For me, Red Clover+ has been a real game changer. It definitely helped. I’d recommend trying this out if you are looking for an alternative.’

Talking therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy, as well as alternative therapies like ice baths and exercise may also improve menopausal symptoms

Every woman’s experience of menopause is different – but there’s no reason why it should stop us living our lives to the full.

Around a million women in the UK use some form of support to manage their menopause, according to the National Institute of Care and Excellence (NICE).

‘Alternative therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy, may also improve hot flushes, nights sweats and other menopausal symptoms and can be considered in women who do not wish to take HRT or have contraindications to taking HRT,’ advises the British Menopause Society.

‘We’re confident that Red Clover+ can be a safe and effective way for women who want a natural route to a more calm and comfortable menopause,’ says Dr Ferrer. That’s why we’re very happy to let women try it for just £5, a saving of nearly 30%, so they can find out for themselves. We hope that a lot more people share a positive experience like that of Karen and Asha.’
