Man caught trying to sell pensioner’s freshly-severed penis at shopping centre

A 32-year-old man appeared in court charged with unlawful possession of human tissue after severing a man's penis.

The suspect, who has not yet been named by South African police, was arrested at Fingoland Shopping Mall. He had been trying to sell the severed penis of a 68-year-old man, which had reportedly been removed without the victim’s consent.

Local news channel News24 reports the 32-year-old man appeared at Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday (April 24) where he has been charged with unlawful possession of human tissue.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli told the channel that the man is now expected to be transferred to Mthatha, where he will face an additional charge of attempted murder.

WO Nkohli said the suspect was taken into custody during a citizen's arrest after he was found with the dismembered penis at a shopping mall in Butterworth.

He added: “It is believed that he was looking for a buyer in Butterworth.

“Preliminary investigations have revealed that the private parts were removed from a 68-year-old man in OR Tambo District."

That man is now recovering in hospital but it is thought because of the time between his penis being severed and recovered from the suspect means surgeons can no longer reattach it.

Eastern Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, praised residents for arresting the suspect, saying: “This is a despicable and cruel act. The actions of the suspect are inhumane, and justice must take its course."

It has yet to be revealed how the victim lost his penis and whether the arrested suspect had anything to do with the assault.

The names of both suspect and victim are being kept confidential for now, say cops.

In South Africa, there is a branch of traditional medicine called Muti which uses human body parts to make “remedies” for various illnesses and conditions..

In February 2010, Deputy Provincial Commissioner William Mpembe of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in North West Province said that "muti murders, particularly those involving young children, seem to be on the rise in the Tshwane areas including Soshanguve, Garankuwa and Rietgat".
