Man, 68, left seriously wounded after fighting off 12ft shark with diving knife

    A pensioner has been left with life-changing injuries after fighting a giant shark off with a knife.

    The unnamed 68-year-old was swimming near Anaehoomalu Bay in Waikoloa, Hawaii when the attack happened.

    According to local news outlets, happened at around 8.15am local time on Tuesday (December 13) when the bloke was left with a “good chunk” of the left side of his back rear bitten off.

    And witness Anthony Singh told Hawaii News Now that the attack, around 400 yards from the shore, was “brutal”.

    Singh added: “It was hectic.”

    The man, who managed to use a diving knife to “fend off” the ravenous shark, has been confirmed to be in a stable condition.

    Other swimmers helped to get the man to safety, before he was transported to a nearby hospital.

    He was treated at Queens North Hawaii Community Hospital.

    One witness said: “Our friend, yesterday, was right out there where the swimmer was – I guess it’s just wrong place, wrong time.”

    A spokesman for Hawaii Police said: “Hawaii Island police have initiated a public accident case in connection with a shark attack that was reported on Tuesday morning, December 13, 2022, at Anaehoomalu Bay, in Waikoloa.

    “A 68-year old Waikoloa man was swimming about 400 yards offshore around 8am when the shark bit him on the lower left torso.

    “The swimmer attempted to fend off the shark with a diving knife and the shark released the swimmer.

    “The swimmer was assisted to shore and transported to Queens North Hawaii Community Hospital by Hawai‘i Fire Department personnel for treatment.

    “The Waikoloa man is in stable condition and will be transported to Oahu for treatment of non-life threatening injuries."

    It is not know what breed of shark attacked the man, and investigations are ongoing as this is the second incident in a matter of weeks to take place in the same area.
