Former Pakistan PM Imran Khan arrested as party make ‘torture’ claims
The former Pakistani prime minster and legendary cricketer Imran Khan has been arrested in Islamabad.
Video footage shows Mr Khan being manhandled by dozens of helmeted officers, wielding batons and riot shields.
According to Pakistan’s Dawn News, Mr Khan was arrested outside the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claims he is being “tortured”.
The 70-year-old made a statement prior to leaving for the IHC, having repeated allegations that a senior serving military officer has tried to have him killed on two occasions.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) – the PR wing of the Pakistan Armed Forces – said on May 8 that Mr Khan’s “irresponsible and baseless allegations” were “extremely unfortunate, deplorable and unacceptable”.
