Fire which killed woman and fiancé over Christmas was an accident

House blaze which killed woman and her fiancé over Christmas was caused accidentally, fire chiefs reveal

  • Rebecca Foster, 32, and Kieran Naylor, 33, both died in December after the fire
  • Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service say it was accidental and began in living room

A house blaze which killed a young woman and her fiancé was caused accidentally, fire chiefs have revealed.

Rebecca Foster, 32, died on December 13, shortly after the devastating fire in the early hours of December 12 at the detached house in Delph Lane, Daresbury, Warrington, Cheshire.

Her fiancé Kieran Naylor, 33, died two weeks later in Whiston Hospital, on Boxing Day 2022. In a touching tribute, Mr Naylor’s family said the couple had been reunited and ‘will always be in our hearts’.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service engines from five stations rushed to the scene, supported by relief crews from four others and an aerial ladder platform. The detached house was ‘well alight’ on the ground floor, before spreading to the roof.

While investigations are still ongoing into the blaze, fire chiefs have confirmed it was started accidentally, having concluded that it began in the ground floor living room.

Lee Shears, assistant chief fire officer for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: ‘The instability of the house caused by the fire damage has made it extremely challenging to determine the cause of the fire.

‘However, we have concluded that it started accidentally in the ground floor living room, and we are still undertaking further investigations to determine the exact cause.’

Rebecca’s heartbroken family said they had been ‘absolutely torn apart’ by her loss.

In a tribute released after her death, they said: ‘Rebecca was a loving and caring daughter and our lives have been absolutely torn apart by her death.

‘She and Kieran made the perfect couple, and the pair were planning to spend the rest of their lives together, but sadly they will never be able to fulfil their dreams.

‘We would like to thank everyone who tried to help Rebecca and Kieran on the night of the fire for all their efforts and would ask that we are left to grieve in peace at this difficult time.’

Kieran’s family said their lives ‘will never be the same’ after his death.

They said in a statement: ‘Kieran really was the best son, brother and uncle that anyone could have wished for, and he will be sorely missed by everyone who had the pleasure to have known him.

‘Kieran and Rebecca are now reunited forever, and they will always be in our hearts.

‘We would like to thank everyone who tried to help Kieran and Rebecca following the fire and would ask that we are left to grieve in peace at this time.’

An inquest into Rebecca’s death is due to be heard on June 19.
