Deputy and officer shoot, kill man in Summit County neighborhood
A police officer and sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man in a Summit County neighborhood early Sunday morning, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident began at about 7:20 a.m. when authorities received a report of a man “wandering in the neighborhood, waving a firearm and banging on residents’ doors,” in the Summit Cove neighborhood, Lt. Wanda Wilkerson said in a statement.
A sheriff’s deputy and a police officer located the man at the intersection of Idlewild and Summit drives. He did not listen to the officers and pointed a gun at them, Wilkerson claimed. Both the officer and the deputy shot and killed the man.
Wilkerson did not identify the deputy or the police officer, and did not say which police department the officer belong to. She did not return requests for additional information Sunday.
Both the deputy and officer who fired were placed on administrative leave and an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
“We want to assure the community that we remain committed to building and maintaining trust through transparency,” Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in a statement. “We will provide updates on the progress of the investigation as they become available, while also respecting the confidentiality and legal considerations that may arise during the process.”
