No real fun: American couples caught smuggling in 720 POUNDS of Fruit Roll-Ups to Israel ‘for relatives’ amidst price jumps thanks to treats’ resurgence on TikTok

• An unidentified couple was stopped at Ben Gurion International Airport on May 1 when their four suitcases were flagged for containing American contraband
• A few days later a nearly 350-pound box of the candy arrived in the customs unit of a post office, address to another couple 
• In total, 722 pounds of Fruit Roll-Ups were attempted to be smuggled into the country. It comes as the candy has had a resurgence in popularity on TikTok  

Two couples – one is known to be American – was caught smuggling in more than 700 pounds of Fruit Roll-Ups into Israel for their relatives as the popular 1990s snack continues to have a resurgence across TikTok. 

The unidentified couple was stopped at Ben Gurion International Airport outside Lod on May 1 when their four suitcases were flagged for containing American contraband. 

Officers discovered the couple had nothing but the snacks inside their bags, not even a pair of clean underwear were anywhere in sight, but when asked why they were carrying such a large amount of the pectin-based candy, they simply told officials they were bringing them for relatives to enjoy. 

When the customs agent asked the man why he had not packed any clothes, he said he had clothing in Israel.

Officers discovered the couple had nothing but the snacks inside their bags, not even a pair of clean underwear

Three days later, 10 boxes of the candy – totally 347 pounds – was intercepted in the mail. Although the recipient of the boxes did not match the couple’s names

Israeli journalist Amy Spiro posted a video of their luggage on Twitter, showing the individual-wrapped candies floating around in the cases, not a single box in sight. 

A total of 375 pounds of the candy was found in the suitcase, alone, according to Spiro. 

Three days later, 10 boxes of the candy – totaling 347 pounds – was intercepted in the mail, according to Israeli news site Ynetnews. Although the recipient of the boxes did not match the couple’s names. 

The boxes were intercepted by the Israeli Tax Authority at the Central Customs Units at the Parcel Mail Sorting Center in Modi’in, Israel. The Tax Authority determined the boxes contained a ‘commercial quantity’ of Fruit Roll-Ups, which are subjected to taxes and fees by law. 

Between the airport contraband and the mail shipment, the two couples were found with a total of 722 pounds of the sugary candy. 

Neither couple have been named, but the airport couple has been said to be American.

The trend has led to an increase in demand and a spike in prices.  

The trend first became popular earlier this year, hundreds of videos continue to pop up of people enjoying the crunch dessert, many with surprised faces as they believed the candy wouldn’t harden like others claimed. 

However, the Israeli Health Ministry advised citizens to avoid the candy, as it can lead to weight gain and Type 2 diabetes, among other health concerns.
