An earthquake has struck Cornwall with a number of residents reporting feeling their houses "shake".

Earthquake monitoring site VolcanoDiscovery reported it occurred around 10.7km south of Redruth at 6.38am.

Residents living between the towns of Redruth and Mabe said they felt the tremor around that time, CornwallLive reports

Luckily, it doesn't appear to have been too powerful. VolcanoDiscovery currently lists the magnitude as "unknown" although there is a tentative estimate of 2.6 on the website.

The site says it has received 24 reports of the earthquake, with shaking intensity described as "very weak".

Some residents said on social media they felt a "rumble" that sounded like a "large vehicle".

One resident said: "I heard a rumble thought it was thunder."

A second said: "I am more than 10 miles from Helston and definitely heard a rumble and felt a shake."

A third wrote: "I’m at top of Godolphin Road – heard a massive rumble at 6.30am – sounded a bit like thunder but clearly wasn’t."

A fourth said: "It sounded like a great big truck was coming towards the house (even though we don't live by a road) and it got louder then the house shook and it went away."

A fifth agreed: "I thought it was a large vehicle going past my house."

The last recorded earthquake in Cornwall was at the end of October 2022.

The tremor occurred at around 6.42pm in Penpol, near Truro, on Tuesday, October 25, and had a magnitude of only 0.5.
