Commerce City wildfire: Crews on scene at Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR

A wildfire burned about six acres at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in an area off of East 70th Avenue and Quebec Street.

The South Adams County Fire Department “knocked down” the fire north of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, according to wildlife refuge officials.

Visitors were ordered to leave the refuge, and people asked to stay away from the area if possible. About 10 miles northeast of downtown Denver, the 15,000-acre property is home to bison, deer, coyote, fox and bald eagles.

Firefighters will remain on scene tonight, mopping up and checking for hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
