A Bolivian convict has attempted to escape from a maximum security prison by dressing as a sheep and crawling through grassland.

José Luis Callisaya Diaz – who is serving a 15-year sentence for homicide in Chonchocoro prison in La Paz, Bolivia – wrapped himself in sheepskin in a bid to roam free.

Diaz, nicknamed ‘El Araña’ (the spider), reportedly snuck past Chonchocoro prison security by crawling through grass in the middle of the night.

He then attempted to break through one of the facility walls in a bid to escape his incarceration.

The real wolf in sheep’s clothing attempted the escape earlier this month, but recent images have now surfaced following his recapture by prison guards.

Guards quickly noticed that the slippery criminal wasn’t in his cell and authorities scrambled to bring him into incarceration.

Guards found him in the act as he inched across the grassy field on his hands and knees and he was quickly returned to his cell.

In a bizarre set of photos, Diaz can be seen wearing the sheep wool jacket and dark trousers while appearing to trail through the grass, impersonating the farmyard animal.

The escape artist believed he could take advantage of the cold weather to avoid the slammer.

Juan Carlos Limpias, the director of prisons across Bolivia reassured the country that the failed escape artist was back in custody.

He said: ‘We inform the Bolivian population that prison security police officers from the San Pedro de Chonchocoro Penitentiary Center prevented the escape of prisoner José Luis Callisaya Diaz (alias El Araña), who took advantage of the inclement weather to try to flee through one of the walls of the external perimeter of the prison.’

Since the prison break, authorities have ordered legal and disciplinary actions against the prisoner.

Social media users were left baffled by the comical botched escape, with many praising the prison staff for their work in returning him to his cell.
