Susan Hall blasts eco-hypocrite Sadiq Khan for jetting off to climate conference

Susan Hall tackles Sadiq Khan over ULEZ expansion

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been blasted as a climate hypocrite by his Tory rival for City Hall, after announcing he intends to fly off to New York to discuss climate change.

No-nonsense Susan Hall slammed his decision, coming just weeks after expanding the Ultra Low Emissions Zone under the pretence of improving London’s air pollution levels.

Mr Khan will attend the UN General Assembly and climate ambition conference in the US next week, accompanied by a number of advisors.

He said he intends to “bang the drum for business and investment” during the trip.

The mayor has come under fire for the announcement, amid Londoners’ fury at having to cough up £12.50 to get behind the wheel of a non-ULEZ compliant motor.

The Tory candidate Susan Hall told the Express he will “emit tons of carbon flying to New York just so he can lecture people on their emissions”.

She said: “Not only is it hypocritical, he is wasting time promoting himself when he should be sorting out crime and helping people with the cost of living.

“Londoners deserve so much better than this.”

Ms Hall vowed that should wouldn’t waste time with such stunts, promising: “As mayor, I will focus on the bread-and-butter issues that matter to people.”

A bombshell poll out 10 days ago put an end to Sadiq Khan’s complacency as he attempts to secure a third term in office.

The Times found that Susan Hall and Sadiq Khan are neck-and-neck to be the next Mayor of London, with Ms Hall just one point behind her Labour opponent.

If, as has been rumoured, Jeremy Corbyn puts himself forward, she would leapfrog Mr Khan and secure a five-point lead.

Mr Khan will appear alongside Prince William in New York at an event for the Earthshot Prize, promoting innovative ways to “repair the planet”.

A carbon footprint calculator suggests the 11,000km round trip for Mr Khan will emit 1.8 tonnes of CO2, or 3.4 tonnes if travelling in business.

Since becoming mayor, the Tories calculate Sadiq Khan has accumulated over 360,000 air miles from various overseas trips.

Mr Khan said: “I am looking forward to visiting New York where I will be banging the drum for London, showcasing our capital as the perfect destination for businesses to invest in and tourists to visit as I continue working to build a more prosperous London for everyone.

“I’ll be meeting many leading businesses and investors during my stay and reminding them that there is nowhere better than London on the planet to set up, or grow your business.

“I am also honoured to have been invited to participate in this key summit taking place during the United Nations General Assembly about climate change, the biggest global threat we face today.

“I am determined for London to continue being a world leader in tackling the twin dangers of air pollution and the climate emergency. My visit to the UN is an opportunity to learn from other cities and nations and ensure London remains at the forefront of global action.”
