‘Keep fighting fit’ – Tory MP hits back after posting half-naked pictures online

A Tory MP has hit back at Labour after posting half-naked pictures of himself on Instagram.

Conservative MP for Milton Keynes North Ben Everitt has pushed back against opposition MPs over his “thirst trap” photographs on Instagram.

Mr Everitt’s social media feed features several photos of him topless while swimming.

While these photographs are harmless, they triggered a row after Mr Everitt engaged in an argument with Peter Marland, the Labour leader of Milton Keynes Council.

The dispute was over whether Milton Keynes had or was being considered as a location for dumping nuclear waste.

Speaking to the BBC Local Democracy Reporting Service, Mr Everitt said: “Nuclear Waste Services have confirmed that no site in Milton Keynes has entered a consideration process by the government.

“For blindly obvious reasons. It’s not a plan. It never was a plan. It’s utterly misleading to claim there is or was a plan.”

During the debate, Mr Marland criticised Mr Everitt and told him to “put his shirt on and…get off the ski slope”.

Mr Marland added that Mr Everitt should “stop taking ‘thirst trap’ pictures…and actually start representing the people of Milton Keynes”.

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a thirst trap is “a statement by or photograph of someone on social media that is intended to attract attention or make people who see it sexually interested in them”.

Following the scathing remark, Mr Everitt told the Sun that he was not posting thirst trap pictures and that he was simply trying to keep fit.

He said: “The only trap here is Labour’s claptrap about nuclear waste. I make no apology about keeping fighting fit for the people of Milton Keynes.”

Following his comments, the government also commented on the incident by referring to the question of nuclear waste in the area.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Department for Energy and Net Zero said: “Nuclear Waste Services is not considering any locations in or near Milton Keynes as a site for the storage or disposal of radioactive waste.

“Milton Keynes was never formally part of the geological disposal facility process, which is based on the need for both a suitable site and a willing community.”
