The former Chancellor is struggling to shrug off his Remainer reputation in the race to become the UK’s next prime minister.

Speaking in Belfast this week, the two candidates promised to pursue the Northern Ireland Bill as the way to solve the Brexit impasse with the EU.

But despite claiming there was “not a lot of disagreement” between him and Ms Truss, Mr Sunak failed to convince Tory party members.

A worried Tory voter told PoliticsHome: “He would bend towards the larger institution, which is the EU.

“I don’t think he would serve the people of the UK. I think he would serve the people of the US and the EU.”

The former Chancellor received the endorsement of former cabinet minister Michael Gove this week.

Mr Gove slammed Tory leader hopeful Liz Truss and said her campaign has been a “holiday from reality”.

He stated her tax cuts will put “the stock options of FTSE 100 executives” before the poorest.

Meanwhile, if elected as PM, Mr Sunak will “put the strength of the state at the service of the weakest” while providing millions of people with support needed during the crippling cost of living crisis.
