Prince Andrew ‘sought permission from Queen’ before doing Newsnight interview
Prince Andrew is reported to have been given the Queen's permission to be interviewed on BBC Newsnight about his relationship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, according to host Emily Maitlis.
The Duke of York was heavily criticised after giving a calamitous performance when quizzed by Maitlis in 2019 over allegations that Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre was trafficked as a 17-year-old to have sex with the royal.
Maitlis has since left the BBC but spoke to Channel 4 for a new two-part documentary titled Andrew – The Problem Prince, which will air near the time of next month's Coronation.

In the programme Maitlis says that the negative implications of the interview “dawned” on the Queen “before they did on [Prince Andrew]”.
The presenter also added that Andrew had told her that he had to “seek approval from higher up”.
She said: “Of course, he’s talking about the Queen. You’re asking your mum if it’s a good idea.”
The Duke later stepped down from public life and last year, he settled out of court for £12million with Ms Giuffre in her US civil sex claim. He continues to deny any wrongdoing.

Ms Giuffre's lawyer, Sigrid McCawley, said the Newsnight interview gave her client the “roadmap to tear him apart” in the civil claim.
Ex-Newsnight producer Sam McAlister claimed a “euphoric” Andrew thought the interview “had gone really well”.
