The missile found in some woods in Poland has been confirmed as Russian, meaning the NATO member could try to force all others into war with Vladimir Putin.

World War Three fears were sparked back in November when a missile strayed into Poland, which borders Ukraine, and killed two people.

At the time there was much debate over whether the weapon was of Russian origin, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convinced it was.

And then, during a heavy Russian missile campaign in mid-December, another rocket was tracked coming into Poland.

In April this year, the remains of a missile that authorities believed to be from the December incident were found in a wooded area near the Polish city of Bydgoszcz.

At the time the Polish Defence Ministry couldn't confirm its origin.

However today (Wednesday, May 10) reports have emerged seemingly confirming it came from Russia.

Polish media outlets report the Technical Institute of the Polish Armed Forces has confirmed it was a Russian Ch-55 missile.

It is a long-range missile that can be armed with nuclear warheads.

According to RMF, at the time some thought the missile may have been launched from a Polish training ground.

However, the Polish army does not have any Ch-55 missiles.

The findings from the Technical Institute of the Polish Armed Forces show it likely came across Poland's eastern border.

As a NATO member, Poland could attempt to invoke Article 5 of the Washington Treaty which codifies members' commitment to collective defence.

Article 5 reads: "The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all and consequently they agree that, if such an armed attack occurs, each of them, in exercise of the right of individual or collective self-defence recognized by Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations, will assist the Party or Parties so attacked by taking forthwith, individually and in concert with the other Parties, such action as it deems necessary, including the use of armed force, to restore and maintain the security of the North Atlantic area.

"Any such armed attack and all measures taken as a result thereof shall immediately be reported to the Security Council. Such measures shall be terminated when the Security Council has taken the measures necessary to restore and maintain international peace and security."
