Husband searched water for wife and fought off huge shark which ate her alive
A brave husband stayed in the water after an "aggressive tiger shark" attacked his wife and ate her alive, despite the beast circling him.
The unnamed woman, aged 60 and from Washington State, was snorkelling with her husband 50 yards off Keawakapu Point on the Hawaiian island of Maui on December 8.
Dan Dennison, a spokesperson for the state Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), said her husband spotted the shark and rushed to tell her, returning to shore and calling 911 when he couldn't find her.

Local news outlet KHNL reported that he told the authorities they both fought the shark, but that only he made it back to shore.
Now, a further statement from DLNR has revealed more detail about the woman's final moments.
"He told officers the shark swam off while he continued looking for his wife by popping his head out of the water and scanning the surface," it said.
The shark returned and the panicked husband spotted something in its mouth.
The statement continued: "He did spot something in the distance and then the shark came back, and he could see something red around the shark’s gills.
"At that time, he said people on the beach began yelling at him to get out of the water because a shark was feeding in the area."

A witness said he saw the “shark’s large mouth continuing to feed on something in the middle of the red cloud in the water”.
As previously reported, the hunt was discontinued after 17 search efforts in 40 hours, spanning a 306-mile radius of ocean.
According to Hawaii News Now, a snorkel set and part of a bathing suit were found.
Witnesses said that the shark was a tiger shark, with some estimating it to have been roughly 10ft to 12ft long.
