Horror as boy, 8, falls 328ft into ‘volcanic sinkhole crater’ while on holiday

An eight-year-old boy slipped and fell into a volcanic sinkhole crater, but miraculously survived the 328ft tumble.

The boy was on holiday with his family on a remote tropical island when the horrific incident unfolded.

The French boy, who is said to have suffered head injuries, was visiting the Los Gemelos, a pair of craters on Santa Cruz Island, when he slipped and fell on July 7.

Galápagos National Park said in a statement on Facebook: “The details of the fall are still unknown, but fortunately the quick action of rescuers trained for these emergencies managed to pull him out of the bottom of the more than 100 metres [328 feet] crater.”

The youngster’s condition is stable, and he will be transferred to a hospital in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador, for further evaluation.

Boris Daza, the director of the Santa Cruz hospital, told local media that it was “something miraculous” that the boy did not sustain more severe injuries.

Los Gemelos, also known as “The Twins,” are two large craters situated in the upper part of Santa Cruz, separated only by a narrow highway.

Galápagos National Park states that these twin craters were formed when the surface material collapsed over two underground chambers, likely resulting from ancient volcanic activity on the island.

As lava flows out of an active volcano, it carves deep grooves along the volcano’s slopes and these can crust over creating underground tunnels, called lava tubes.

Over time, the surface material of the volcano erodes and can eventually give way, resulting large sinkholes like Los Gemelos.
