Furious locals have blasted an ‘ugly’ eight feet wooden fence around a building site – claiming it won’t stop dust covering their homes as they compared the barrier to a ‘German PoW camp’.
The timber fence was erected on the edge of a housing estate currently being built in West Parley, near Bournemouth, Dorset.
Bellway Homes, a development company, installed the 400 metre long wooden fence to act as a screen for dust following complaints from locals.
Residents had said their houses and cars were being coated in brown dust that was blown across from the site.
A spokeswoman for Bellway Homes said: ‘The wooden fence will be an additional dust prevention measure and more effective than the hoarding that was previously in position.’

The company said it had reduced deliveries to the site, had an on-site 10mph speed limit and redirected groundwork labour to limit the dust.
One local resident said: ‘The fence is huge and looks so ugly. It is one long line of timber. It reminds of a German prisoner of war camp.’
Kaye Woodward, a project manager, previously complained to her local council’s environmental health after dust coated both the interior and exterior of her home.
She said the dust has been better lately, but only because the rain had dampened down the particles.
She added that neighbours were complaining about the unsightly fence.
‘The dust has been a lot better lately, but it is not because of the fencing which was finished at some point last week,’ she said.
The site before the fence was erected showed the building site, which apparently caused dust on locals’ houses and cars
A gap in the eight feet fence was left to allow access to a public footpath

When finished, the new estate will have 36 new homes as well as a new Lidl supermarket
‘The developers are not at the excavating stage at the moment, they’re just putting the foundations in place on the ground, so dust isn’t being churned up.
‘Plus, there has been on and off rain.
‘However, the fence wouldn’t stop the dust, in fact Environmental Health has told me that when it’s dry and windy, no amount of fencing would stop the dust.
‘Some residents are also angry about the view now outside their house, saying this is what we have to look at for the next four years – but you can’t have it all.’
When finished, the new estate will have 36 new homes as well as a new Lidl supermarket.
