‘Britain in a nutshell’: ‘Drunk’ commuter boosts spirits of ‘gloomy’ rail passengers with a crossword puzzle… and before long they’re all shouting out answers
- Commuters buoyed by playful traveller drinking wine miniature
A ‘drunk’ commuter transformed the ‘gloomy mood’ of delayed train passengers by roping them into completing a crossword with him – with some claiming it represents ‘Britain in a nutshell’.
Commuters were spared some relief from the monotonous train delay when one traveller pulled out an old newspaper crossword and started calling out the questions.
The train was caught up in delays due to flooding, leaving travellers frustrated.
However the mood of the carriage was quickly flipped by puzzle fan.
The puzzle fan can be seen in the video sat alone, asking bemused travellers the name of a Venezuelan river as he casually sipped from a wine miniature.
A video of the heartwarming scene went viral on TikTok, racking up more than 3.7million views.

One commuter said: ‘The good thing is it was from all age groups as well, there were younger and older people all getting involved’
One person on TikTok commented ‘So much better than everyone ignoring each other like normal!!’
The company area manager shared the funny footage on the social media platform, with the caption ‘How one guy changes the mood of the whole train carriage through a crossword puzzle. Wait until the end*’.
Damion, who is friends with the puzzle master from Swindon, Wiltshire, said: ‘The group of us four guys just went out to London. We’d been out for a day/night out.
‘It was one of the days we had loads of floods, so a lot of the trains were delayed.
‘Everyone crammed into first class because there were limited trains and so we just started taking the mick out of one of our friends.
‘He carries around puzzles and stuff in his pocket, we were taking the mick and pretending we didn’t know him.
‘It was from a really old newspaper, it wasn’t a recent one. He just had it in his pocket for some reason.
‘He started doing the puzzle and calling out for answers and the whole train started getting involved.
‘It really lightened the mood because everyone was a bit peed off because of all the delays on the train.
‘There were people sat on the floor and stuff because it was the last train for everyone to just ram onto it.
‘He just started doing the puzzle and everyone started getting involved and to our surprise it was quite popular.
‘To our surprise, there was someone on the train who knew the answer to each of the questions.
‘Even the questions we didn’t know, there was someone that did.
‘It was a bit of a collective thing really. Everyone was connecting over it and joining in.
‘The good thing is it was from all age groups as well, there were younger and older people all getting involved.
‘The reaction to it was all positive, I don’t think there was any negative reaction to it at all.

‘It feels good that we’ve been able to send out so many positive vibes just from one video, I’m kind of overwhelmed with the reaction.
‘It’s good to see positive comments from people rather than negative ones.’
