Sunak mocked for North Korea style escort of jogging police officers
Police were seen jogging and cycling alongside what appeared to be Rishi Sunak’s motorcade in scenes compared by social media users to North Korea.
In the video widely shared on Twitter, dozens of officers are running as they surround the convoy in central London.
The footage shows a number of police on pushbikes leading the motorcade, followed by jogging officers.
There are then several motorbikes ahead of four blacked-out Range Rogers, another car and a police vehicle.
More jogging police offers take up the rear of the convoy.
The clip prompted Twitter users to compare the security detail to that of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has previously been seen with bodyguards running alongside his limousine.
One quipped: “Is Kim Jong Un in town?”
Another commented: “What an absurd thing to watch – I always associated this with North Korean dictators.”
A third wrote: “North Korean vibes.”
LBC presenter Shelagh Fogarty said: “I’d love to know the thinking behind this. The running uniforms feels a bit Kim Jong Un. Very odd.”
Another Twitter user wrote: “Rishi Sunak and security detail doing their best impressions of North Korea.”
One more added: “Never seen anything more ridiculous Rishi. Waste of police resources, and still had motorbike escorts. North Korea is not a good look.”
Labour MP Diana Johnson, the chair of the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee, said: “This is quite a spectacle! Never seen so many police officers running like this?”
In the clip, a policewoman is heard saying it is the Prime Minister when asked by a member of the public.
It is not clear when the video, which was posted on social media today, was taken.
But there were road closures in the capital yesterday for the London marathon.
There has also been a four-day protest by Extinction Rebellion in Westminster which kicked off last Friday.
No 10 and the Met Police declined to comment.
