Who is Konstantin Kudryavtsev?

IN August 2020 Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was poisoned with the nerve agent novichok and was hospitalised.

It was later determined that the attack was likely carried out by FSB agents. But who was Konstantin Kudryavtsev and how was he involved?

Who is Konstantin Kudryavtsev?

Kudryavtsev is an FSB spy who was duped into apparently revealing how Putin-critic Alexei Navalny was poisoned.

Kudryavtsev was a graduate of the Military Biological-Chemical Academy and later had a role at the 42nd (biological warfare defence) Institute of the Ministry of Defence, according to Bellingcat.

What happened to Konstantin Kudryavtsev?

Kudryavtsev's account, given during a 49-minute phone call, provided shocking insights into how the opposition leader's attack was carried out.

The agent was unaware that the top FSB official he thought he was talking to was in fact Navalny himself.

Posing as "Ustinov Maxim Sergeevich", Navalny questioned Kudryavtsev on why the plot to poison him ended in failure.

Kudryavtsev detailed how novichok was deposited on Navalny's underpants while he was out of his hotel room.

The Soviet-era nerve agent was used to poison double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury on March 3, 2018.

Kudryavtsev suggested that had the plane not been diverted to Omsk, where Navalny's life was saved by paramedics, the "result would have been different".

He said that if the plane "had flown a little longer and they hadn’t landed it abruptly somehow and so on, maybe it all would have gone differently.

"That is, if it hadn’t been for the prompt work of the medics, the paramedics on the landing strip, and so on".

Where is Konstantin Kudryavtsev now?

After the phone call was revealed in December 2020, Kudryavtsev disappeared and has not been seen since.

Navalny ally Lyubov Sobol was found guilty of trespassing at Kudryavtsev's property following the revelations, and received a suspended sentence of one year's community service.
