Tsunami warning: New Zealand earthquake alert for waves in Australia, Colombia and Mexico

A monster 8.1 magnitude quake struck New Zealand at 7.28pm GMT, with an alert issued over the possibility of waves spreading in the hours since.

A new update from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre this morning has put areas as far away as Mexico on alert.

The centre said tsunami waves “have been observed” and “hazardous” conditions are expected for some coasts.

The update this morning said: ” TSUNAMI WAVES REACHING 0.3 TO 1 METERS ABOVE THE TIDE LEVEL ARE POSSIBLE FOR SOME COASTS OF ANTARCTICA… AUSTRALIA… CHILE… COLOMBIA… COSTA RICA… ECUADOR… MEXICO… NICARAGUA… PANAMA… PERU.”
