A royal commentator has drawn comparisons between Prince Harry’s recent Today Show interview, and the infamous Oprah Winfrey chat he appeared on with his wife Meghan Markle last year.
While attending the Invictus Games in The Hague, Harry appeared in an interview with a US news channel CBS.
The prince addressed a number of talking points, including being welcomed with “open arms” to life in California, and also suggesting that he had visited the UK on a stop-over to The Hague in order to ensure that the Queen is “protected”.
But, reflecting on the interview on the Palace Confidential podcast, the Mail’s diary editor Richard Eden criticised the ex-royal for failing to offer more certainty about his relationship with the institution in the future.
“To me it seemed really calculating. Harry’s now married to an actress, and I get the impression that he’s given guidance, tips, he’s prepared for this type of interview,” he suggested.
“It was meant to be about the Invictus Games, there’s some really fascinating stories there, but oh no, it’s all about Harry.
“Everything he said, the calculated digs at his family, it was a real hark back to the Oprah interview, and it seems to be very much calculated and planned for, I think.”
During the interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, Harry and Meghan made a number of allegations against the Firm, including a claim that one unnamed royal had made comments about the colour of their son Archie’s skin.
Richard acknowledged the distance that this had put between the Sussexes and the royal institution, and stressed that the consequences could have been hugely damaging for the monarchy.
“I was left furious after that Oprah interview, particularly by that, they threw those accusations out there and what was so damaging was, it was left hanging," he continued.
“They sort of suggested that the Royal Family was racist without naming anyone, and that led to all sorts of speculation and it has ever since."
And, with Harry making a reference to wanting to “protect” the Queen in his new interview, Richard claimed the prince was following the same line as before.
He added: “Everyone’s talking about,’what does he mean by ‘protection’? Who’s looking after the Queen?… we’re all trying to see who he’s having a dig at.”
Tessa Dunlop, who was also speaking on the panel, disagreed, suggesting that the Duke of Sussex isn’t “capable” of being so calculating in a live television interview.
“I think what he’s very aware of is the need to walk a fine line, a tightrope, and that’s super challenging. And you saw him sort of duck and box,” she noted.
“It was an extraordinarily uncomfortable watch I felt, from that point of view, but I don’t think it was cynical or calculated.”
