Dramatic footage, which may be distressing for some people to watch, shows the moment police approached a man on the Knoll in Runcorn, Liverpool ECHO reports.

Police were called to the scene at around 1.20pm on Wednesday after reports from people in the area who were concerned for the man's safety.

In the clip, as officers approach the man, with guns pointed to where he is standing on a grass bank, they shout to him multiple times.

"Armed police, show your hands!" screams one officer.

The man raises his arms with an item in his hand, pointed in the direction of the police.

A deafening gunshot then rings out.

At the end of the clip, which was captured by a witness from inside a building, the man clutches his stomach.
