New mum killed after partner ‘drives on to level crossing to beat the train’

A new mum was killed when a train smashed into her car on a level crossing in the US.

Rhonda Clay's partner had gone round the barrier to beat an on-coming train, Texas police said.

Brittinie Green, 32, has been charged with manslaughter after Rhonda, 30, was declared dead at the scene in east Harris County.

She was being driven home from hospital after giving birth to a premature baby girl.

But was ejected from the BMW X3 after it was struck by the New Orleans to Los Angeles passenger train on Wednesday, the Houston Chronicle reports.

The car was sent several hundred feet down the tracks by the force of the impact at 5pm local time.

Green is accused of recklessly causing the death of her partner by driving around the railroad crossing arms and onto the tracks, court filings say.

According to deputies, the barrier's arms were in the down position when Green drove around them, indicating a train was coming.

Rhonda and Green became friends in high school and in May moved in together, heartbroken mother Cassandra Clay said.

She added: "Knowing her, I know it wasn't intentional. She's going to hold stuff more against herself than we would."

Rhonda had become pregnant through IVF treatment after several years of trying.

Nearly three weeks ago, she was taken to hospital with pregnancy complications and doctors performed a C-section on Monday.

Clay gave birth to her 24-week-old daughter, named Lovely.

The family says their faith will now carry them through the family will raise Rhonda's newborn baby girl.

Rhonda's brother Caleb told ABC13: "My sister was at every track meet I had when I was in school. She was my biggest supporter."

Her other brother James added: "I just want to tell my sister that I love her. She means the world to me. That's my best friend. We grew up together."
