Man suffered ‘unbearable pain’ of seeing brother beaten to death in front of him

A man who was attacked and grievously injured by two drunk men spoke about his terrifying experience in court and how he feared that he would not survive.

The incident occurred last October, when Alexandru Rizea and his brother, Catalin, had both been drinking with Florin and Gabriel Andrei at Pinders Oak Cottages in Barnsley.

The night for Alexandru and Catalin turned deadly when the Andrei brothers attacked them, stamping on Catalin’s head and hitting him with a bottle.

Alexandru suffered from brain haemorrhage because of the incident, while Catalin died in hospital the following morning, Yorkshire Live reports.

Alexandru gave evidence throughout the trial of Gabriel and Florin Andrei at Sheffield Crown Court during which he said he witnessed the latter stamping on his brother’s head.

CCTV showed Alexandru running from the house with what a judge described as a “grossly swollen” face and blood all over his face.

He was helped by two women and taken to hospital, but in a powerful and emotional victim impact statement read to the court, he stated he barely believed he would survive the ordeal.

The statement was read to the court moments before the Andrei brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years.

Alexandru Rizea said: “Before the incident I used to be a normal man with plans for my future, full of dreams.

“Until that horrible night, I couldn’t believe that it is possible to live through an experience that will mark your life forever and turn your life upside down..

“During the course of that night I didn’t think for a moment my brother and I would escape with our lives.

“Everything I felt that night was fear, unbearable physical pain, weakness.

“Two months after the cruel incident I was unable to take care of myself being in terrible pain, not just physically, but mentally also.

“The first week on my hospital bed, I doubted I would survive. I had no hope I would recover and live.

“I cried many nights in a row. I suffered from insomnia and when I managed to fall asleep, I dreamed of my brother and relived the moments of terror from that cursed night.”

Mr Rizea went on to say he was his sister’s patient and she helped him recover, but she had to tolerate the same mental pain he and his family suffered.

He said: “It affected my whole family in many ways. The aggression they hit us with will remain and will leave me with a feeling of fear all the time.

“I can’t trust people anymore; I no longer trust myself as a human being.

“I lost my confidence and my most important thing; my beloved brother.

“My family and I will have to carry all of our pain and suffering for our loss not just now but for the rest of our lives.

“We are all suffering deeply and our lives will never be the same again. They didn’t just commit a crime against our brother, they killed me inside. They also killed my mother’s and my sister’s hearts.”

Gabriel and Florin Andrei were sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 23 years for the murder of Catalin Rizea.

They were also convicted of grievous bodily harm with intent for their horrific attack on Alexandru Rizea and will serve a 13-year prison term to run concurrent.
