Elephant and Castle fire LIVE – Latest updates as huge blaze erupts at station in south London

A HUGE fire has broken out at a train station in Elephant and Castle, south London.

Worrying video on social media showed thick black clouds of smoke rising high into the air as sirens from emergency service vehicles sounded.

The smoke from the fire can be seen as far away as central London, with people filming dark clouds rising from office and residential tower blocks across south London.

It's not yet clear whether anybody has been hurt in the fire, which is currently causing travel chaos in the Elephant and Castle area.

    Daniel Mead has filmed this video of how the smoke from the fire blocked out the view of the 15th floor of a nearly apartment block.

    TWITTER USER CAPTURES MOMENT OF EXPLOSION

    Twitter user Megan Jearum has posted a video of what looks like an explosion coming from within Elephant and Castle station.

    The video shows a bright fire ball bursting out from through the railway arches as firefighters work to battle the blaze.

    HUGE COLUMNS OF SMOKE VISIBLE FROM LONDON BRIDGE

    The dark billowing smoke from the fire is visible from London Bridge a few miles down the river from the station.

    FIRE AT AUTO-REPAIR SHOP UNDER STATION – REPORT

    Photographer Nicolas Chinardet who is at the scene says there seems to be a fire at the auto repair ship underneath the station but The Sun has not been able to independently verified this.

    He said there were several police cars as well as an ambulance and three fire engines.

    Shocked witnesses described seeing an "explosion and a massive ball of fire".

    One wrote "Lots of black smoke, then an explosion and large fireball erupted.

    "I’m now engulfed in black smoke so can’t see any more"

    STATION CHAOS

    Travellers were urgently evacuated from the station after the blaze broke out.

    Thameslink confirmed there was a fire next to the track at the Elephant and Castle station.

    "All lines through Elephant & Castle are currently blocked. The fire brigade are assessing the situation," they tweeted.

    'FIREBALL'

    'Black smoke can be seen billowing for miles from the station after a “large fireball” erupted at the train station in central London.

    Terrified witnesses posted the shocking images on social media, explaining that they had been “engulfed” in black smoke.

    Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen filling the air above central London at around 1.45pm this afternoon.
