The South Northants MP, who backed Mr Johnson when he ran in the Tory leadership contest in 2019, said the Sue Gray report had uncovered “unacceptable failings” inside No10.

She added: “It is extremely unlikely that senior leaders were unaware of what was going on.”

She stopped short of saying she had submitted a letter of no confidence in the Prime Minister’s leadership but admitted she was considering what action was necessary to restor confidence in the Government.

Policy failings and the fallout from illegal lockdown gatherings in Downing Street have badly hit the Conservatives.

Repeated polls show the Tories trailing Labour in voting intention, with the latest Express.co.uk/TECHNUK  tracker poll showing Sir Keir Starmer’s party seven points ahead.

Published on Saturday May 28, it suggested Labour support had risen one point to 40 percent over the past week, while the Conservatives dropped two to 33 percent.
