Mr Macron reportedly refused a PCR due to fears the Russians would get hold of his DNA.

Macron, 44, met with Putin, 69, to hold five-hour talks about Ukraine across an oversized table, estimated to be 20ft long, on Monday. Images of the table were later mocked online.Two sources in Mr Macron’s entourage said the Frenchman had to obey this strict social distancing because he refused a test.

A source said: “We could not accept that they get their hands on the president’s DNA.”

Mr Macron had taken a PCR test before leaving France and his doctor carried out an antigen test in Moscow, a French diplomatic source said.A representative from the Elysee Palace said: “The conditions imposed for the meeting to take place with no social distancing required a health protocol were…unacceptable and incompatible with the president’s schedule.”

Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov said of the table: “There is no politics in this, it does not interfere with negotiations in any way.”
