Iain Duncan Smith had been invited onto GB News to discuss the appointment of Sajid Javid as the new Health Secretary. The move comes after Matt Hancock resigned the post following revelations over a breach in coronavirus rules involving his close aide Gina Coladangelo. Mr Duncan Smith told GB News that the new Health Secretary would likely be “agitating” for the lifting of the UK lockdown as early as possible.

Mr Duncan Smith told GB News: “Well I have known Sajid for a long time and I know that essentially he is sort of a straight player.

“He will almost certainly be agitating to try to get the UK out of this lockdown.

“Which as I just pointed out causing huge damage to kids at school.

“It is also economically disastrous for all sorts of units from the hospitality all the way through to the airline industry.

“So there is a balance here and as a genuine free marketer, he will want to see that balance right.

“Of course he doesn’t want to do anything that upsets the process of beating the pandemic.

“But all the evidence now tells me and I think many people that we have at last broken the link between hospitalisation and infection.

“And that is the critical bit, the infection rate yes it is raising we need to get that too drop through people’s behaviour.

“But the truth is the vaccines are unbelievably effective.

“And what is interesting about this and he knows this is even one jab is extraordinarily effective.

“Over 70 percent for AstraZeneca and 92 percent for Pfizer and co.

“So I think he has taken that into consideration.

“This position comes with a huge responsibility and I will do everything I can to deliver for the people of this great country.

“Thanks to the fantastic efforts of our NHS and social care staff who work tirelessly every day, and our phenomenal vaccination programme, we have made enormous progress in the battle against this dreadful disease.
