GCSE and A-levels in England and Northern Ireland for this academic year are going ahead with reduced content in some cases. However, there are concerns that the examinations could be extremely unfair as some children experienced more disrupted education than others due to the coronavirus pandemic. Dame Glenys Stacey, the interim Chief Regulator of Ofqual, clashed with BBC Radio 4 host Justin Webb as he demanded to know her view.

She told listeners: “Government policy is that the whole curriculum as it now stands should be taught for examinations.”

However, Mr Webb interjected to ask: “But what do you think? As the head of this body, what do you think would be fair?”

Dame Glenys insisted that it was for Government to decide curriculum policy, but her answered sparked the host’s fury.

He asked again: “Do you not have a view or are you just not willing to share it?”
