Ann Widdecombe spoke about the Covid alert being raised to a four in the UK, the second-highest level and the first time since May that the Government has put the UK on high alert. The new rules are to try and stop the surge of the new Omicron variant from spreading as the latest variant has been sweeping across European countries for the past month. The change was announced on Sunday by Boris Johnson through a televised message to address the public concerns of the variant overwhelming hospitals in the UK, as the Prime Minister warned of a “tidal wave” of new infections across the country.

When asked for her thoughts on the impact of the latest advice from the government, Ms Widdecome told GB News: “Let me answer your question. Of course, MPs should vote against this for two reasons.

“You’ve got to ask yourself why on earth there is panic now over a variant that is mild.

“People panic for two reasons the first is, well just in case. Well if you’re going to say just in case we need to take these extreme measures then you’re going to be crashing the economy at regular intervals.”

Ms Widdecombe added: “Every time this mutates, and it will mutate because that’s the nature of a virus, we’re going to have a just in case scenario. We actually know that this is mild at the moment.”
