Japan’s Shonan Beauty Clinic Now Accepting Payments In Bitcoin

SBC Medical Group, operater of Japan-based Shonan Beauty Clinic, has teamed with crypto exchange bitFlyer to allow patients to settle their bills in cryptocurrency.

Shonan Beauty Clinic is the largest chain of clinics in Japan. It has a large team of doctors that specialize in just about every aspect of the discipline. Some of the treatments available include breast augmentation, liposuction, skin care, gynecology, whitening, hair transplant, eyelids and gender-change operations.

The partnership with bitFlyer, Japan’s largest bitcoin exchange by trading volume and one of the largest in the world, will enable 74 Shonan clinics nationwide to accept bitcoin for services. However, there is a cap on how much a patient can spend. The maximum transaction amount is 2 million yen ($18,700 USD).

Bitflyer said that it has introduced bitcoin to thousands of merchants from various industries and “the number of introduction cases is increasing.” It added that with its partnership with SBC Medical Group and more domestic and overseas businesses — they will contribute to improving convenience for their customers.

BitFlyer is the first bitcoin exchange to be regulated in Japan, the US, and Europe. It has been partnering with a lot of merchants in Japan and now has a wide range of stores that accept payments in bitcion. These include electronics retailers Yamada Denki and Bic Camera, and car dealerships L’Operaio and Idom Inc.

In addition to oprating an exchnage, bitFlyer also focuses a great deal on research and development in the blockchain field. Earlier this month, the exchange announced the addition of Dr. Tom Love as a new advisor. Recognized as one of the Masterminds of Programming, Love will advise bitFlyer on both strategic and technology initiatives, including the development of a proprietary language that applies to blockchain technology.

Yuzo Kano, the founder and CEO bitFlyer, is hoping to unveil its blockchain language “within a year,” and plans to apply it to a range of its blockchain offerings, including its private Miyabi platform, which allows 2,000 transactions per second.
